Man Day, you came and you shipped in a bottle
"If you can treat those two impostors the same, you will be a man, my son.." Said Kipling. However, this site *link* suggests that whittling and ships in bottles are the more important characteristics.
To act like a man is to behave gentlemanly, considerately, with dignity, integrity and honour. If you happen to have a cigar in your mouth, and a ship in your bottle, so much the better.
One wonders what it might feel like to be a woman on man day. Is the sight of testosterone fueled masculinity attractive? Is the musky aroma of burning tobacco mixed with fresh aftershave on shorn cheeks intoxicating or repellent? The answer will remain forever a mystery.
As the fire burns ever dimmer, stir the umber ashes, contemplate your place in the world, the people around you, the future to come and the past you have lived. Man day is a welcome respite from the challenges of modern day living. Where political expediency too often overwhelms the just and the good.
Experience and wisdom is the reward for those who dare to live a well considered life.
If Kipling were alive today, we would respond that to be man is not to take the instruction on manhood from anyone - be they politician, poet, or priest. Or website.

For the record Mr Stockwell, this post was at the tail end of 'Man Day' in which two of us gathered for a selection of manly activities - and drinking.
After finding a website which listed top things 'men' do, we tries to do them all, including fishing (aka - flatmate hides a fish finger in the garden, we try to find it), ships in bottles (we didn't manage that one' and 'classic car restoration' (checked the oil in the bike).
I believe 'blogging' was also one of the challenges, hence this baffling post.
Still, it's better than the 'letter writing' effort, in which we wrote a letter to the council which made even less sense than this.
Man Day is ace.
