art for art's sake

You know those films where a dashing gentleman thief concocts an elaborate and beautifully executed plan to steal a priceless artwork?

You know, the one where he relies on split second timing, an encyclopaedic knowledge of the galleries security systems and procedures and a black, polo-necked sweater.

Well it's actually happened.

And how does the reality of art theft compare with the Mission Impossible-style Hollywood version?

"he cut a padlock on the gate and smashed a window to get inside."

Eat your heart out, Thomas Crown.

Which Thomas Crown? Brosnan was doing surprisingly well in the re-make- right up until the execreable Oirish accent in the final scenes. D'oh.

A case of 'arse (sic) gratia artis' or maybe 'art - gratis'
