Happy Birthday Dr Seuss

I have to say it is today
We sing and dance and clap and play
To celebrate the rather great
And rather sadly, rather late
Dear Dr Seuss, who saw no use
In rhymes that only frowns induce

But tried instead to fill your head
With cats in hats and whos instead
To make you smile and for a while
Forget that’s there’s a paedophile
Behind each bush and tree and weed
(If Daily Mail’s to be believed)

And self-exploding terrorists
And dodgy New Year’s honours lists
And broken banks and house price tanks
And ‘your job’s gone now, see ya, thanks’

All these grim things, the things that sting
The grin-defying suffering
Are for a moment left behind
While travelling through the fertile mind
That brought us joys too vast to list,
Dear Doctor, you are sorely missed.
