Compere and contrast

In an effort to warm up a crowd and get everyone in the mood for a fun night of comedy, it is traditional for a compere to indulge in a little bit of audience banter.

It helps establish a ‘we’re all friends here’ kind of a vibe and sets up a warm, cosy atmosphere in which everyone can have a jolly old laugh together.

So imagine my surprise when the compere last night, as one of his opening lines, chose to go with “There aren’t any Jews in tonight, are there?”

Priceless.

(Note - In his defence, there was a perfectly legitimate reason for the question, related to the giveaway of bacon snacks, so he was actually trying to be helpful, but still

Mind you, I laughed pretty hard, so maybe he knew exactly what he was doing.)
