Frolic, little lambs, frolic

Today is officially the first day of spring.

Now I'll be honest, I've never really understood this notion. A calendar needs to be divided into recognisable chunks to work, so January needs to begin at an identified time and end at a time everyone can agree on.

But what is Spring? It's a season right?

And what is it that defines a season? Surely it's the weather/environment.

That is to say Spring is when it warms up a bit, stuff starts to grow and I find myself unable to drag my gaze above boob level.

That's Spring.

Just as Autumn is when it gets a bit colder, the leaves go brown and telly gets a lot better.

Summer is when it's hot, when it smells of cut grass and when drinking cold beer outside at lunchtime is the pinnacle of life's enjoyments.

And Winter is when I moan constantly about how cold and dark it is and the nation is paralysed by a passing hailcloud.

Thus is nature compartmentalised.

So if spring is defined by weather patterns, there just isn't any point at all in having an 'official' start or finish is there?

If it were snowing, would it still be Spring, just because the date is 20th March?

I don't think so. Spring would, in fact, be late.

Actually, come to think of it, Spring is late. Bastard.

So what do you think? What makes a season?

The start of spring - and autumn, are defined by Equinox, when the sun's shadow is perpendicular to the equator.

Indeed. The passage of the moon determines the date of Easter, which falls on the first fourteenth day of the Paschal Full Moon after the vernal equinox. That is why Easter falls on a different date every year, and this year it was astonishingly early.
