Headline of the day

MySpace finds 29,000 sex offenders!declares today's Guardian.

What? They just opened a neglected broom cupboard at MySpace HQ and there they were, huddled together whispering "shut up or they'll find us,"?

And what carelessness, to lose that many sex offenders in the first place. The Home Office had better up its game if they're going to compete.

In actual fact, it's a rather unsuprising story about there being lots of sex offenders hanging around on MySpace, the giant online playground.

Don't worry though, they've all been cut off the service now and we'll never find out what they're listening to at the moment or who is their favourite actor. Thank the Lord.

Of course none of them would use fake details to log on pretending to be someone else would they?

Nah. Probably not.

I thought the point of that story is that the offenders have all been barred from MySpace in the US, because they have disclosure of the details of registered sex offenders? The problem is that because we do not have disclosure of that information in the UK, we have no way of stopping sex offenders registering on MySpace and making contact with children.

Surely the argument here is that we are not safe at all in the UK, because we would rather protect the rights of the offender than those of actual or potential victims.
