In the Memphis sky

It's time to once again pay tribute to the genius of signage in Shoreditch.

Here we have a bookshop which can be found on Hoxton street (better known as the street down which that twat out of The Verve walked down in the video for Bittersweet Symphony. Also Vindaloo, but that's another story)

Anyway, here is the Hoxton Book Depository...

Not much to laugh about there I hear you cry.

But that name... it's niggling you isn't it? Book depository. Book depository. Where is that such a familiar phrase from?

And then you take a closer look at their logo and you remember why the phrase book depository is so familiar...

Genius.

Although it must be added, unlike 'cheap booze' of the other night, this was a sign that failed to judge its audience. Which is why, sadly, the Hoxton book depository is no longer in business.

Shame.

So it chooses as its logo a man peering through the sight of a rifle, but it fails to target its audience ... indeed that very act is indicative of its failure to do so. Not so much Bitter Sweet Symphony, as Bitter Sweet Irony (bitter, presumably for the 'depository'; sweet for the rest of us).

Incidentally, I think the word 'depository' strikes a chord (with me at least) because of the University Boat Race (I will be posting on this shortly over at http://causticsofa.blogspot.com). One of the landmarks this once great tradition take in on its route is the Harrods Furniture Depository near Hammersmith Bridge.

I am still here... I am still reading every day... please can you post a photo of a typical "Shoreditch Twat" to remind me of home... actually, maybe you could take several, (make some of them all blurry), turn it into a collection, and submit it as a work of art commenting on the vacuousness of modern life?
