Great Typos of our time
Due to a typing error at the Library of Congress, Marting Luther King day will henceforth be known as Martin Luther day.Hence, there will be a slight alteration to the festivities. The day should begin with the head of the household reading out the ever popular 'Lectures on Galatians'. This will be followed with fun for all the family as communities are encouraged to perform reenactments of Luther's famous nailing of his Ninety Five Theses to the door of the Wittenberg church. How we all laughed last year when we discovered the nails we'd brought weren't long enough to penetrate all of the theses, and we had to make do with just Ninety Three of them! What fun.
Of course, no festival is complete without an edible treat, so the baking of Martin Luther Buns (also known as Raving Papist Cakes) is to be encouraged. These simple delights are made by simply following any standard sponge cake recipe, but wherever sugar is required, substituting it with salt. Also, try replacing the traditional dusting of icing sugar with a handful of fine sand for the full mortification effect.
In addition, bake a dozen double chocolate muffins (or Devil's Delights). Smell the rich, chocolatey aroma arising from the oven and distribute them to your family. Then, at the appointed hour of noon, everyone should throw their muffins to a pack of starving dogs, symbolically rejecting the devil and all his temptations. After this, reward the kids with a Raving Papist Cake, perhaps with a little extra sand if they've been good.
Above all, the aim of the day is to have fun and celebrate a the great Martin Luther in a way he would have appreciated. And don't forget, in the words of The Man himself, "Men must especially be on guard against those who say that the pope's pardons are that inestimable gift of God by which man is reconciled to him."
